AEOS AI Receptionist Index
Dental AI Receptionist Buyer’s Index · 2026

Best AI Receptionists for Dental Offices in 2026

We researched and compared leading AI receptionist platforms for dental practices. This buyer’s guide looks at appointment scheduling, practice-management integrations, inbound call handling, after-hours coverage, human escalation, pricing transparency, multi-location support, and how much control the dental team keeps over the workflow.

Research status: This edition is based on current public vendor documentation reviewed August 12, 2026. We have not completed controlled hands-on testing of every vendor, so we do not publish an overall numerical ranking yet. Pricing, integrations, security terms, and availability can change. Verify the exact workflow with the vendor before purchase.
Quick comparison

Start with the workflow, not the sales pitch.

The most important question is not whether a vendor “uses AI.” It is whether it can safely complete the exact front-desk work your dental practice wants automated.

Methodology

How this buyer’s index evaluates a dental AI receptionist.

We separate what vendors publicly document from what should be proven in a controlled test. That avoids turning marketing claims into an invented score.

1. Dental workflow fitNew vs existing patient handling, dental terminology, insurance routing, office rules.
2. PMS integrationRead/write depth, real-time schedule access, new-patient creation, reschedules and cancellations.
3. Scheduling logicProviders, operatories, appointment types, blocks, family scheduling, location rules.
4. CoverageOverflow, after-hours, weekends, simultaneous calls, missed-call text-back.
5. Human escalationLive transfer, warm briefing, clinical boundary handling, caller-requested human handoff.
6. Security / privacyVendor claims, agreements, PHI handling, call recording, access controls, auditability.
7. Multi-location scaleLocation-specific hours, routing, scheduling, reporting, DSO administration.
8. Commercial fitPublished pricing, trial, contract, usage caps, onboarding, support, implementation effort.
Why no 9.7/10 scores? A score should mean the same scenario was run against every product. Until we complete that controlled test, this page uses transparent capability notes and buyer-fit categories instead of precision theater.
Provider notes

What each option appears strongest at today.

These are research-based fit notes, not paid rankings or hands-on performance claims.

Dental-native scheduling

Dentina

Dentina is built specifically for dentistry and currently publishes unusually concrete scheduling and pricing information. Its site documents direct PMS booking, rescheduling, after-hours/overflow handling, SMS, outbound recalls and confirmations, and more advanced transfer options on Premium.

  • Open Dental, Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Curve, Denticon and more
  • 30-day free trial
  • Standard from $299/month when billed annually
  • Premium from $399/month when billed annually

Main thing to verify: the exact appointment types, operatories, provider rules and PMS actions your office needs on the plan you are considering.

Groups / DSOs

Arini

Arini positions its product as a dental-specific front desk with deep PMS scheduling and multi-location capabilities. Current vendor documentation names Open Dental, Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Denticon and other dental systems, with real-time scheduling described across its integration guides.

  • Dental-specific voice AI
  • Advanced scheduling logic
  • Multi-location / DSO positioning
  • HIPAA-related claims and BAA language appear in current vendor materials

Main thing to verify: pricing is quote-based, so compare the complete cost at your call volume and number of locations.

Transparent dental pricing

Viva AI

Viva publishes plan pricing and describes bidirectional dental PMS scheduling. Current pages name Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental and Curve, with broader integrations including Dentrix Ascend, CareStack and Cloud9 documented elsewhere in its current product materials.

  • Gold $349/month for after-hours and overflow
  • Platinum $899/month for broader 24/7 automation
  • HIPAA and SOC 2 claims published by vendor
  • Voice plus messaging and outreach capabilities

Main thing to verify: which PMS features and outbound workflows are included at the specific plan level you need.

Broader dental operations

PatientXpress

PatientXpress markets an all-in-one dental platform rather than only a phone receptionist. Current vendor material covers inbound calls, scheduling, insurance verification, reminders, outbound follow-up and patient communication, with integrations for major dental PMS products.

  • Open Dental, Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Practice-Web, EZ2000 and others
  • AI receptionist plus broader dental workflow tools
  • Inbound and outbound patient communication
  • Insurance-related automation available within the platform

Main thing to verify: obtain a complete quote and separate must-have receptionist functions from broader platform modules you may not need.

Existing Weave practices

Weave AI Receptionist

Weave is bringing AI reception into its existing patient communication platform. Its current early-access page specifically names Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental and describes 24/7 calls and texts, appointment booking, and information moving across conversations and the practice workflow.

  • Voice and text
  • Appointment booking
  • Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental early access
  • Staff handoff inside the Weave ecosystem

Main thing to verify: AI Receptionist is still presented as early access, so confirm present availability, pricing and production feature scope for your PMS.

AI + live human backup

Smith.ai

Smith.ai is a generalist rather than a dental PMS specialist, but it is a useful benchmark because its AI-first service can transfer calls to live North America-based receptionists around the clock. Pricing is public and includes a free entry tier.

  • Free: 25 calls/month
  • Pro: $150/month starting allocation
  • Enterprise: $500/month starting allocation
  • 24/7 AI with optional live-agent escalation

Important dental limitation: Smith.ai currently states that it is not HIPAA-compliant for calls involving PHI. Dental practices should restrict use accordingly and verify their compliance requirements.

Budget generalist

Goodcall

Goodcall is a general-purpose AI phone agent with published pricing and no dental-native positioning. It is useful as a lower-cost benchmark for practices whose workflow can be handled through general calendar, CRM and automation connections rather than deep dental PMS rules.

  • Starter $79/month per agent
  • Growth $129/month per agent
  • Scale $249/month per agent
  • 14-day trial and unlimited minutes/tokens currently advertised

Main thing to verify: whether the workflow you need can safely reach your dental schedule and patient context without a custom workaround.

Custom technical build

Retell AI

Retell is infrastructure for building AI voice agents, not an out-of-the-box dental front desk. It can be attractive to technical teams that want control over the agent, API calls, webhooks and custom integrations.

  • Pay-as-you-go AI voice pricing currently $0.07–$0.31/minute
  • $10 free credits
  • API and webhook access
  • 20 free concurrent calls listed on current pricing page

Main thing to verify: implementation cost. The voice layer may be inexpensive while the dental scheduling, security, QA and maintenance work remains your responsibility.

Dental buyer checklist

Ask these questions during every vendor demo.

  1. Show me a real appointment being written into my exact PMS.
  2. Can the AI reschedule and cancel, or only create new appointments?
  3. How does it respect provider, operatory and appointment-type rules?
  4. How are new patients distinguished from existing patients?
  5. What happens if the requested time is unavailable?
  6. Can the AI clearly distinguish a pending request from a confirmed appointment?
  7. What does a caller hear when they ask for a human?
  8. Is there live human backup, or only transfer to my own team?
  9. What happens after hours when a caller describes something urgent?
  10. Which calls, recordings, transcripts and patient data are stored?
  11. Will the vendor sign the agreements our practice requires?
  12. Which parts of the workflow involve PHI?
  13. Can one deployment follow different rules for multiple locations?
  14. What are the real monthly charges at our current call volume?
  15. Are setup, integrations, overages, extra locations or support billed separately?
  16. Can we test the same 10 call scenarios before going live?
How to choose

The best dental AI receptionist depends on what you are actually delegating.

If direct PMS booking is the priority

Start with dental-native vendors that publicly document real-time scheduling in your exact PMS. Ask the salesperson to prove the complete booking, reschedule and cancellation path rather than showing a generic calendar.

If overflow is the priority

You may not need the most complex platform. Focus on reliable after-hours/overflow answering, structured intake, safe escalation and clean staff follow-up.

If human backup is the priority

Compare whether “human handoff” means a vendor-supplied live receptionist, a warm transfer to your own team, or simply creating a callback task.

If you operate multiple locations

Verify office-specific hours, services, scheduling rules, reporting, permissions and cross-location routing. DSO support should be demonstrated, not inferred from a generic multi-user dashboard.

FAQ

Questions dentists should ask before buying.

What should a dental office compare before choosing an AI receptionist?

Start with the exact practice-management system connection, permitted scheduling actions, after-hours and overflow behavior, human handoff, privacy and security requirements, multi-location rules, pricing, and how the vendor proves that a requested appointment was actually written to the practice schedule.

Which dental AI receptionists currently document Open Dental support?

Dentina, Arini, Viva AI, PatientXpress and Weave AI Receptionist currently publish Open Dental support in their vendor materials. Verify the exact action set in your deployment before treating any integration as complete.

Should a dental practice require direct PMS scheduling?

If the goal is automatic booking, verified PMS write-back is a major decision factor. If the practice prefers staff approval, a structured pending request can be safer than automatic confirmation.

Are all AI receptionists appropriate for PHI?

No. Vendor compliance posture and configuration differ. Smith.ai, for example, currently says it is not HIPAA-compliant for calls involving PHI. Dental-specific vendors publish different security and HIPAA claims. Verify agreements and data handling directly with each vendor.

Why are there no overall scores yet?

We have not completed the same controlled hands-on test across every product. Publishing decimal scores now would imply evidence we do not have. A later testing edition can add scores after each vendor is evaluated against identical scenarios.

Where AEOS fits

Want to hear an AI receptionist before choosing one?

AEOS publishes this buyer’s index and also sells its own AI receptionist service. That commercial relationship is disclosed here so you can evaluate the comparison with the right context. AEOS is designed around answering calls, structured intake, follow-up and controlled business workflows; it should only claim an integration when that exact connection is configured and verified.
